The Wall at the End of the Rainbow

Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht

From 6 March until 24 April 2020 the Jan van Eyck Academie will hold an exhibition The Wall at the End of the Rainbow, curated by participant Natasha marie Llorens.

You aren’t supposed to see infrastructure: train signaling systems, wireless networks, water drainage. Infrastructure is just supposed to work or to make things work. But what do you not-see when everything is working, when you don’t have to think about the infrastructure that allows for your perception of the world? What does infrastructure obscure? What does its absence reveal?

Inviting the public to rethink systems, networks, and conventions, curator Natasaha marie Llorens brings together the work of 13 artists allowing us to consider food, territory, graphic design, art institutions, nature, borders, history, and plastic from a unique perspective. The exhibition will shed light on the system that makes tote-bags ubiquitous at Open Studios, the conventions that govern how much color you can use to make a poster before it becomes not-designed, the distance from the ground you need to be able to see your food as food, and more.

Works by Joélson Buggilla & Jorgge Menna Barreto, Antonio Bermúdez, Jonathan Castro Alejos, Kent Chan, Elisa van Joolen, Yazan Khalili, Mehdi-Georges Lahlou, Massinissa Selmani, Randa Maroufi, Youngeun Sohn, Lotte Reimann, and Marjet Zwaans.
